Abstract
Nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques can be useful in finding problems that cannot be easily identified through conventional bridge inspection techniques. This article describes some NDT techniques that have been used effectively in bridge evaluation/inspection programs. These techniques include: ground-penetrating radar (GPR), impact echo (IE), impulse response (IR), infrared thermography, videoscope/borescope inspection and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) testing. Cases studies are provided describing the IR evaluation of bridge deck debonding, IE-detected voids in post-tensioned tendon ducts, a GPR bridge deck survey, and UPV evaluation of honeycombing in bridge piers. These case studies highlight how NDT, when used correctly, can yield fast and accurate results for many areas of bridge inspection and evaluation.
