Abstract
The 16-member Star Alliance of airlines is struggling to develop seamless connections among its members, a task made more difficult by the fact that they each have their own internal Information Technology (IT) systems of varying ages and platforms. The first significant step was the creation of StarNet, a translation device for its members. It allows users to continue with legacy software but messages are translated and readable on all members' systems, so no training in new techniques is required. The next step is a common IT platform, which would allow members to pool resources to offer common services that could boost their profitability and attract new passengers with enhanced offerings. The three lead carriers, Air Canada, Lufthansa and United Airlines, have an RFP out for development of a mutual reservation system.
