An unprecedented rehabilitation project in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada saw the replacement of Lions Gate Bridge section by section over 10 hour periods in the night, while the bridge remained in service during the day. The $80 million effort on the 45 year old bridge involved seismic retrofitting, which included three primary elements: 1) build-up of the existing H-bents in order to longitudinally anchor the structure; 2) allow piers to rock transversely; and, 3) add piled foundations in areas where liquefaction potential is high. The project also included widening of sidewalks, as well as replacement of the suspended span deck. This article details the efforts taken in the restoration process. It is believed that the Lions Gate Bridge is the first major suspension bridge that was seismically retrofitted under a design/build format. In addition to being vulnerable to high winds, the bridge is also thought to be the first major suspension bridge that had its deck completely replaced while maintaining traffic.
