Comme le souligne justement François-Marc Gagnon dans la préface de l'ouvrage, Esther Trépanier a découvert que toute une série de peintures datant d'avant 1948 «n'avaient rien à voir avec le traditionalisme, l'académisme ou le régionalisme (...) et qu'il fallait bien (les) qualifier de modernes puisqu'elles donnaient le pas au subjectif et du point de vue esthétique à la forme sur le contenu».C'est dans la ville que la vie moderne s'exprime.Acteurs particuliers de cette grande plongée dans le milieu urbain qui a été le lot de nombreux émigrés au début du XX e siècle, les peintres juifs ont entrepris de représenter la ville et l'homme de la ville au cœur d'une période de troubles et de crise.Comme d'autres peintres canadiens qui privilégiaient ces thèmes, ils se posaient ainsi en marge du courant qui enjoignait aux artistes de représenter le terroir.Mises ensemble, les œuvres des peintres juifs de Montréal reflètent avec une acuité particulière la façon dont la ville devient le territoire obligé de la modernité.D'où l'intérêt de les regrouper.
