Des études antérieures sur les lesbiennes dans l'enseignement ont amené l'auteure à conclure que la plupart des enseignantes des niveaux primaire et secondaire de l'Ontario ne se sentaient pas suffisamment en sécurité pour affirmer leur identité sexuelle en classe, même si la législation ontarienne sur les droits de la personne protège leur emploi. En revanche, que se passe-t-il pour les professeures d'université titularisées ? Cet article analyse les présomptions qui sont souvent faites et les raisons qui sont invoquées pour inciter les lesbiennes (ou les gais et les personnes bisexuelles) à affirmer ou pas leur identité sexuelle devant leurs étudiants, quel que soit le niveau où elles enseignent. L'auteure analyse les questions que soulève le problème de l'affirmation de l'identité sexuelle, les conséquences pédagogiques et politiques qu'elle entraîne ainsi que les pressions extérieures exercées pour diverses raisons sur ceux et celles qui enseignent afin qu'ils s'affirment.
