Abstract
Instrument landing systems (ILS) provide airplanes guidance towards a precision runway approach. Two radio transmitters that are located near the runway transmit specific signals to guide the aircraft for landing. A VHF localizer transmitter provides lateral guidance, while a UHF glide path transmitter provides vertical guidance. This article relates how NAV Canada, the country air navigation services provider, has deployed its ILS replacement program. The new ILS have advanced features, such as built-in fault diagnostics, remote maintenance, and condition monitoring capabilities. In addition, the new systems are less susceptible to snow accumulation, and have antennas that are less vulnerable to airport buildings. With the improvements, carriers will receive better service and NAV Canada will see cost savings from reduced maintenance requirements.
