Abstract
This article focuses on the major initiatives that are being pursued by Halifax International Airport to increase traffic into the United States and Europe. In October 2006, airport officials will be introducing customs pre-clearance for U.S.-bound passengers. The customs pre-clearance program will lead to faster turnaround times. This is expected to stimulate trans-border traffic between the U.S. and Canada and lead to about 325,000 passengers passing through by 2009, reflecting a 130% increase from 2006. The airport’s ticket counters and stations were converted to a common use terminal equipment system in early 2006 in anticipation of a forecasted 3.9 million passengers by 2009, reflecting a 22% increase from current traffic. An active marketing campaign directed at attracting more carriers is currently in progress. The airport is also anticipating an increase in passenger traffic resulting from the growth in cruise ship business into Halifax.
