Abstract
Andre Malraux declarait qu'apres les grandes affres politiques du XXe siecle, le XXIe siecle serait spirituel ou ne serait pas. Tout en analysant la situation historique a sa maniere, Kenneth White propose autre chose : une ouverture au monde, un renouvellement de l'expression sous toutes ses formes : un nouveau fondement culturel, pour lequel il a invente le concept et le terme de geopoetique. Cet essai examine ce concept des points de vue scientifique, philosophique et litteraire, suit quelques itineraires individuels (La Perouse, Humboldt), salut l'?uvre de quelques grands compagnons de route (Thoreau, Cendrars, Kazantzakis?) et deploie la premiere cartographie d'un (nouveau) monde, tout en situant les idees et les pratiques de la geopoetique dans notre contexte sociopolitique actuel. Kenneth White, ne en Ecosse, vit en France depuis 1967. Il est l'auteur d'une oeuvre feconde ecrite pour une part en anglais pour une autre en francais et a obtenu le prix Medicis etranger en 1983. Il est a l'origine du concept de nomadisme intellectuel et fonde l'Institut international de geopoetique en 1989. Au Mot et le reste il a publie La Route bleue, Les Cygnes sauvages, Les Vents de Vancouver, La Mer des lumieres, Derives, La Traversee des territoires, Au large de l'histoire, etc.
