Abstract
This article provides an overview of India's 450 airports and the changes that need to be made to them as a result of the country's speedy economic growth. In the past two years alone, air traffic has grown 20 percent a year. A number of Indian airports were built during World War II by the Allies, and have remained unused since then. The Indian government plans to spend nearly $17 billion to upgrade roads, airports and ports by 2010; one quarter of this will be spent on building and modernizing 32 airports. The article describes the financing plans for the upgrading, as well as privatization efforts and opportunities for foreign investment.
