Revisiting Home: Reading Miriam Toews's a Complicated Kindness and Sandra Birdsell's Children of the Day through the Lens of Ontario-Mennonite Literature
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Starting in 1924 with Trail of the Conestoga, Mabel Dunham, followed by Edna Staebler, established an iconic if romanticized and uncomplicated idea of for Canadian readers¯an idea rooted in the imagined home life of Pennsylvania Mennonites who had established themselves in Ontario just before 1800. Today, Ontario playwrights Sunil Kuruvilla, Andrew Woolner, and Anne Chislett reveal the staying power of the Dunham/Staebler paradigm by making it central to assumptions about their own work. But readers encountering approaches to the Mennonite home in recent novels by Miriam Toews and Sandra Birdsell find themselves in unfamiliar territory, for the iconic romanticism is gone. Yet, for a moment at the end of Toews's and Birdsell's respective works, readers discover that these two Manitoba novelists briefly seem to close the gap between themselves and Dunham/Staebler, for there, however tenuously, they at least point readers toward familiar glimpses of home.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
