Abstract
The increase in ridership on buses in London, UK is described and Peter Hendy of Transport for London (TfL) outlines his plans for the London bus network. The bus service has become more reliable. Plans are being made for the bus requirements during the 2012 Olympic games. TfL is trying to anticipate the amount of public transport capacity it will require by 2025. Corridor management is one option for the future, using additional bus lanes and traffic management measures to speed up buses. The first are envisaged over two north London routes served by high-capacity Mercedes-Benz Citaro bendibuses: the 38 (Victoria-Hackney) and 149 (London Bridge-Edmonton). The next generation of buses in London will have lower emissions, wheelchair ramps, low floors and improved ventilation. Trials are being conducted with fuel-cell buses. TfL will push for diesel-electric hybrid buses. Most Routemasters will be phased out and more bendibuses introduced. Cash fares are gradually being phased out in favour of TfL's OysterCard smartcard.
