Abstract
Pour bon nombre d'observateurs, de l'intérieur et de l'extérieur, l'Espagne semble constituer un cas extrême d'identification entre le catholicisme et la nation. Fondé sur deux ouvrages récents fort documentés de M. Diaz-Salazar, professeur de l'Université Complutense de Madrid, cet article tente de cerner les solidarités qui lient le catholicisme et les forces vives de l'Espagne moderne en trois moments de son histoire: le début du siècle, le triomphe du national-catholicisme, le retour de la société pluraliste et sécularisée. Cette analyse pose une question fondamentale et donne lieu à l'esquisse d'une théorie socioreligiologique du sacré comme piste privilégiée de recherche explicative. Il est à espérer que l'étude approfondie de l'évolution sociale, politique et religieuse du catholicisme à l'intérieur d'une société moderne puisse nous aider à mieux situer les solidarités réelles que vivent les hommes et les femmes - ici et ailleurs - en cette fin du siècle.
