Abstract
This article presents a profile of WestJet, which was launched in 1996 with a focus on short-haul passenger flights in western Canada. The occasion for the article is the retirement of the last of its 737-200s, which have been replaced by a fleet of 737NGs. The shift reflects the company’s growth to a preeminent national carrier that challenges Air Canada with a share of just over 33 percent and rising. Elements of the company that CEO Clive Beddoe says contributed to its success include profit-sharing plans that permit the company to resist unionization of the workforce and high average aircraft utilization, as well as a policy of treating customers as “guests.” Losses have been registered, but profitability returned in the final quarter of 2005, avoiding a second straight year in the red. Additional information is provided on financial and operating results, possible partnerships with other operations and route expansion.
