Abstract
Montreal in Canada has a rail system, bus network and underground metro system. The city tramway system was closed in 1966. Effective bus lanes have been implemented. The longest of these is the Jean-Talon to Rene-Levesque (5.4 km). Montreal has a system of four metro lines. The metro lines are run separately from each other and there are plans for their extension. The metro and city buses are run by STCUM, Societe des Transports de la Communeaute de Montreal. STCUM also co-ordinates suburban rail transport. The Deux-Montagnes line has been reconstructed. All twelve stations have been renovated or are new. There are also three diesel suburban commuter lines: Montreal-to-Rigaud, Montreal-to-Blainville and Montreal-to-McMasterville. There are plans for a light rail line between Gauchetiere and Chevrier and between Jean-Talon and Rene-Levesque.
