Abstract
This report presents the results of an investigation of the use of innovative prefabricated elements and systems to limit traffic disruption during the construction, rehabilitation, and replacement of bridges. The study was designed to assess and document the impact of these systems and elements on the system design effort, on-site construction time and cost, closure time, and environmental impact. In addition, the study attempted to identify the most suitable prefabricated systems for bridge construction, rehabilitation, and replacement. The synthesis report also looks at the use of fiber-reinforced polymers and other advanced materials and new technologies that are gaining in popularity, but are still in the experimental stages. A review of new systems currently under evaluation is also presented. Information for this report was derived from a literature review of the state of the practice for prefabricated bridge elements and systems and a survey of transportation agencies in the United States and Canada.
