Abstract
The award by Railtrack of an eight-year contract to GB Railfreight, to haul infrastructure and engineering trains, brings competition to the dominant position of English, Welsh and Scottish (EWS) rail freight services. The contract is seen as part of a strategic policy move by the Railtrack controller to diversify suppliers of important infrastructure train services. GB Railfreight has taken delivery of seven new Class 66 locomotives from General Motors, Canada, the company already supplying similar locomotives to EWS. It is concluded that significant changes are forecast in the UK rail freight industry, likely to affect the present operators, perhaps allowing GB Railfreight to capitalise on the situation.
