Abstract
This is a superbly illustrated exploration of a crucial period in the development of photography. Comprising 100 photographs, this outstanding book celebrates the special contribution that American photographers made to the history of art in the 20th century. Shot from 1900-1950, these photographs represent an extraordinarily fertile period in the evolution of photography and include striking works by Edward Steichen, Clarence White, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange, Berenice Abbott, Lisette Model, Andreas Feininger, Weegee and members of New York's Photo League. This is a scholarly essay accompanied by dozens of individual presentations discuss provenance, history, technique, and details of the life and times of the photographers.
