Abstract
A retrospective look at air traffic control is presented, starting with the 1968 commissioning of the first computerized ocean ATC system with Canada's Gander Automated Air Traffic Control System (GAATS). Before computerization, separation across the Atlantic for east and west bound traffic was static and forced flights into routes that could require refueling stops, especially during bad weather. The use of the datum line was not conducive to jet aircraft because it forced them to take routes that required refueling. The Organized Track Structure enabled closer separations and more favorable routes. By 1968, radar scans were being converted into visual displays for controllers. Without transponder in early years, a lot of identification was done through radio transmissions and identifying turns. A climax for the GAATS system was the 1967 Montreal Expo, which created a great deal of air traffic.
