Abstract
The population of Calgary, Alberta has risen from 400,000 in 1971 to 860.000 today, and every day 50 more peop0le move to the city, and with them come 25 cars. There is a concentration of 102,000 employees, 12,000 residents and 32.2 million square feet of office space in a 1.4 square mile area in downtown Calgary. The city relies heavily on transit to help curb congestion and sprawl. The article examines the highly effective way that Calgary Transit and its parent city government have demonstrated their grasp of the fact that transit must play a highly effective role in controlling sprawl and maintaining the health of the urban core.
