Abstract
The discipline of Canadian theatre scholarship has a relatively short history, dating from the mid 1970s. This article traces some key changes that have occurred in the discipline and argues that a declining emphasis on empirical research is jeopardizing informed debate about the past, present and future of Canadian theatre. The validity of political and critical assessments of the frequency and impact of productions of Canadian plays abroad, for example, is undermined by the paucity of empirical research that has been undertaken on this subject. Yet the culture and ideology of current Canadian theatre scholarship seem inimical to research of this kind, a situation, the article suggests, that should concern scholars, theatre practitioners and politicians alike.
