The Center Street and McKnight Boulevard project was a collaboration between the City of Calgary's Major Road Reconstruction Program and the Transit Priority Program. The focus of the Major Road Reconstruction program is to rehabilitate major roads in the City of Calgary that are past their life cycle and in need of repair. Centre Street North was on the list for rehabilitation, which provided the perfect opportunity to collaborate and construct queue jumps at McKnight Boulevard to assist Calgary Transit buses bypass the queues at the McKnight intersection. This project improves the City's existing infrastructure and directly impacts thousands of daily commuters using Calgary Transit along this corridor. The implementation of Transit Priority Measures (TPMs) are strategic in nature and typically include detailed analysis considering both costs and benefits. This paper describes the planning and implementation of a significant transit priority measure in Calgary from the planning to the construction phase. In addition to providing specific project details, a brief history of transit priority measures in Calgary is also provided.
