Abstract
The article takes an in-depth look at Canadian Pacific Railway, a company whose recognized ingeniuty has made it a leader among the Class I railroad companies. Ingeniuty is seen to have enabled them to handle record volumes without massive capacity related investments; has led to a preference for alliances over mergers; guided the development of an integrated operating plan that has released hidden potential; and spurred greater fleet standardization. It has also extracted unprecedented levels of productivity from the workforce. The company CEO promises that the best is yet to come.
