This article looks at the development, accident rate and deployment of remote-control locomotive (RCL) devices, beginning with the RCL operations at BNSF Railway Co. The article includes a Federal Railway Administration accident audit of the devices in use and contains some of the safety guidelines used by railroads such as Montana Rail Link and BNSF. RCL installation plans for Norfolk Southern Corp.., Montana Rail Link, and Montreal Main and Atlantic Railway are also outlined. A final section addresses the role of major RCL suppliers.
