Abstract
Until recently, Fort McMurray was a sleepy city in Alberta, Canada. However, the boom in the North American oil industry has almost tripled the population in the past 15 years. This article discusses the challenges that this rapid growth has presented for regional planners. The growth has strained the housing supply, utilities and public services. Transportation has been a particular problem since only one major road connects Fort McMurray with Edmonton. This road is plagued by heavy congestion and traffic accidents. The government is expanding a 149-mile portion of the highway, but work is progressing very slowly. More integrated planning between the industry and the government is essential to meeting long-term infrastructure needs.
