In 2006, Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure constructed granular base stabilized field test sections to evaluate alternative recycling and strengthening rehabilitation systems for the Saskatchewan road network. The field test sections on Control Section (C.S.) 15-11 are comprised of cement base stabilization, cement with asphalt emulsion base stabilization, and a remixed and unstabilized base. This study demonstrated that the triaxial frequency sweep apparatus is a pragmatic tool to characterize fundamental mechanistic constitutive parameters of stabilized granular materials and their behaviour to actual applied field stresses and load frequencies. Conventional and mechanistic laboratory testing of all stabilized and unstabilized granular materials sampled from the C.S. 15-11 rehabilitation project was conducted. Both cement and cement with asphalt emulsion base stabilization systems improved conventional material strength test results including indirect tensile strength, California bearing ratio, and unconfined compressive strength results. Stabilization also significantly reduced moisture sensitivity of the granular base materials. Mechanistic laboratory testing was conducted using the triaxial frequency sweep apparatus and showed cement and cement-asphalt emulsion stabilization improved fundamental constitutive properties including dynamic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, phase angle, and radial strain of the in situ granular materials. Triaxial frequency sweep characterization quantifies material constitutive relations used for mechanistic road structural modeling and this enables the design engineer to characterize the primary structural responses of alternate structures across various traffic loadings and load frequencies under typical Saskatchewan field state conditions.
