Abstract
World Vision International (WVI) is a Christian non-governmental organization with a mandate of improving the lives of children and their communities in underprivileged societies.The focus of the organization is on sustainable development projects and emergency relief.However, World Vision is perhaps best known for its use of child sponsorship programs.The organization justifies the use of child sponsorship as a primary method of generating income by noting in promotional materials that " ... [c]hildren are the best indicator of a community's social health.When children are fed, sheltered, schooled, protected, valued, and loved a community thrives" (World Vision 2006).Due to their use of television infomercials featuring celebrities with infamous portrayals of "children with flies in their eyes", World Vision International (WVI) has become one of the largest and most successful child sponsorship NGOs, generating income in the billions and operating on six of the world's TOTEM: vo1.
