Abstract
The author reviews current developments in airport rail links around the world and notes the increasing popularity of light rail as an airport feeder system. Brief details are given of new lines under construction or planned at Hamburg, Milan, Varese, Bergamo, Turin, Lyon and Glasgow. Outside Europe schemes are described in Bangkok, Tokyo, Moscow, New Dehli and in Indonesia. New features are noted such as Oslo's 'Swipe and Go' paperless ticketing system. Progress in introducing in-town check-in facilities, check-in machines at stations and through air-rail baggage handling is discussed. Light rail has proved particularly popular in North America with schemes opening or planned in Phoenix, Seattle, Vancouver, Salt Lake City and Dallas. The use of automated peoplemovers is described including Miami's MIAmover which connects the airport with a new transport interchange the Ultra personal rapid transit system to be trialled at Heathrow.
