Abstract
Pace Suburban Bus in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights is an example of a suburb-to-suburb bus service, which requires different approaches from traditional urban bus transit operations. The service area is dispersed, 3,446 square miles over six counties encompassing 284 municipalities with a population base of 5.2 million. It is the sixth largest fleet among transit systems in the U.S. and Canada. It is using smaller buses, because big buses are too large for streets in satellite cities. Politically, a paratransit van with only one rider doesn't look as empty as a 40-foot bus with five people. While it has larger buses, too, nearly 60 percent of the fleet are 30 feet long or less. To extend its reach, Pace is creating services that use vanpool, ridesharing and contracted taxi providers. Other steps to ramp up efficiency and responsiveness include extensive analysis of market demand, intelligent tracking of bus performance and partnerships with agencies and political entities. Additional discussion includes programs aimed at the elderly and future funding possibilities.
