Abstract
This article features an interview with the president and chief executive officer of LifeSpan Technologies, a company that develops structural health monitoring solutions that use real-time information. The interview focuses on the limitations of the current U.S. bridge inspection system and the role that structural health monitoring can play in ensuring the integrity of bridges. Advanced condition assessment technology is proposed as a tool to lengthen bridge life cycles and focus funds on the greatest maintenance and replacement needs. Although not all new bridges need structural health monitoring systems, bridges that are unique in design or that are constructed using material where there has been limited practical experience may benefit from structural health monitoring as a cost-effective way to provide objective information about bridge condition.
