Abstract
En beauce, dans le Perche et dans les pays de la Loire moyenne (Orléanais, Blésois, Touraine), les guerres de religion furent sanglantes. À cette violence extrême a succédé une coexistence entre une minorité calviniste (moins de 3 % de la population) et une majorité « papiste ». Au XVIIe siècle, cette coexistence fut parfois ponctuée de tensions qui donnèrent lieu à des violences anti-protestantes en 1621. La Réforme catholique (missions, catéchèse, séminaires) s'implanta lentement, aboutissant à l'amélioration de la formation et de la moralité du clergé paroissial et des chapitres (tel le prestigieux chapitre cathédral de Chartres). La vague de satanisme, dont l'un des épisodes les plus retentissants se joue à Loudun, toucha le Berry et la Touraine de manière particulièrement vive. Les formes jugées « superstitieuses » de la piété populaire suscitèrent l'hostilité du clergé dont le rigorisme – parfois lié à l'influence du jansénisme – s'en prit aux festivités profanes qui accompagnaient les fêtes religieuses. Cette sévérité contribua à préparer les détachements de l'époque contemporaine. Mais au XVIIe siècle, c'est le zèle catholique qui prévalut, en particulier dans les couches supérieures de la société, soutenant les entreprises missionnaires, notamment l'implantation des ursulines tourangelles au Canada.
