Abstract
This article describes how Mumbai-based Jet Airways has taken advantage of market liberalization in India to gain a foothold in the subcontinent's market. Because of its attention to service and quality, it has become one of the most recognized brands. This describes the airline's origins in 1993 when public-sector-monopoly Indian Airlines dominated. Initial investors Kuwait Airways and Gulf Air had to be bought out after Indian government objections, but the 2005 offering of 20% of the company resulted in a windfall for the Indian owner. It depends heavily on business generated in the financial capital of Mumbai, with about one-quarter of the flights out of this hub. Other developments include breaking the decades-long monopoly on overseas services with flights to Singapore. It is also India's first publicly traded airline company. Challenges include a pilot shortage, growing competition and managing the integration with Air Sahara. Selected results are included, along with details of the fleet.
