Kajian paras kepekatan ke atas logam-Iogam berat (Cd, Pb dan Zn) dalam sedimen marin dan kerang telah dijalankan di sekitar Teluk Likas, Kota Kinabalu. Sampel kerang dan sedimen telah diambil pada Disember 2005 dan dihadamkan dengan menggunakan asid nitrik 69-70% sebelum dianalisis dengan mesin Spektrofotometer Serapan Atom (polarized Zeeman Z-5000). Nilai kepekatan logam yang dikaji dicatatkan dalam berat kering (µggE‰1). Stesen 4 iaitu kawasan rumah atas air mengandungi kepekatan logam yang paling tinggi berbanding dengn stesen-stesen yang lain iaitu Cd (2.67 ± 1.72 µggE‰1), Pb (27.81 ± 4.39 µggE‰1) dan Zn (168.79 ± 8. µggE‰1). Di stesen 4, kerang Callista sp. mempunyai kepekatan Cd (1.68 ± 0.17 µggE‰1) yang paling tinggi manakala kerang Anadara granosa mencatatkan kepekatan Pb (4.26 ± 0.60 µggE‰1) dan Zn (122.00 ± 37.85 µggE‰1) yang paling tinggi. Korelasi antara kepekatan logam dalam sedimen dengan kepekatan logam dalam kerang Meretrix meretrix menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang signifIkan (p<0.05) bagi logam Cd dan Ph dan tidak bagi logam Zn. Ini mungkin disebabkan pengambilan Zn oleh kerang dikawal oleh tisu badannya. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa paras kepekatan logam-logam Cd dan Ph dalam sedimen masih dalam julat nonnal yang ditetapkan oleh Alloway (1990) kecuali bagi logam Zn. Kepekatan logam Zn dalam sedimen adalah relatif tinggi berhanding dengan paras kepekatan logam yang wujud secara semulajadi dan berpotensi membawa kesan kritikal kepada persekitaran. Kerang yang diambil daripada kawasan kajian ini adalah selamat untuk dimakan kerana kepekatan logam Cd, Pb dan Zn dalam kerang ini adalah masih mematuhi piawai-piawai yang ditetapkan oleh ICES (1988), ABIA(1991), MPHT (1986), USFDA (1990) dan NHMRC (1987).
