Abstract
Air Canada, a legacy carrier, is facing challenges in the airline industry that has been reshaped since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Despite the fact that it has 70% of the Canadian domestic market and faces no network competition, the airline lost $281.6 million in 2002, after losing about three times that much the previous year. A fierce competitor is Calgary-based WestJet, which is growing and enjoying profits. Legacy airlines face challenges in the form of expensive labor contracts. One of Air Canada's steps has been to reduce the workforce. To compete with low-fare competitors, it has launched two low-fare units. Operations have been trimmed by simplifying by unbundling operations, such as the maintenance and repair arm, to make it into a standalone profit center. Others being spun off include is ground handling operations. Its two low-fare subsidiaries, Tango and Zip, are aimed at specific markets and employ interesting strategies.
