Abstract
This article presents a profile of Pinnacle Airlines as an example of a successful U.S. regional carrier typical of the way the segment has evolved over the past 20 years. It started as a moderate codeshare partner with Northwest based in Memphis, Tennessee. Northwest purchased it outright in 1997 with the goal of improving reliability. The fleet was transformed from turbo-prop to regional-jet and service was widely expanded. Pinnacle now operates 100 aircraft with more than 500 daily departures to 83 cities in 39 states and one Canadian province. It is expected to rise to 129 aircraft by the end of 2005. Its success has led some analysts to question whether Northwest will want to rely exclusively on Pinnacle or spread its business among other partners to make it less vulnerable to disruptions. Pinnacle, too, is expected by some to explore codeshares with other carriers to expand its market reach. However, its CEO says Northwest is the best partner his company could hope for. While its management structure is lean compared to many in the industry, there are plans to reduce administrative costs more through expanded use of part-timers.
