Abstract
This article discusses the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for tourist applications such as guided tour systems for touring in three-wheeled vehicles. In San Francisco, the GoCar uses GPS for individualized guided tours, while in San Diego, tourists have access to the Tour Coupes vehicles. These systems work by the GPS signaling to the tourist that they have entered into an interactive area where information regarding points of interest can be accessed, if so desired. A Canadian system is also described, with the GPS identifying various points of interests (POI) as the tourist navigates about the designated touring zone. Handheld multimodal GPS systems for pedestrians, automobiles, and bicycles are also being offered in National Parks at the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. European systems are also described, which help customers locate local sites such as bars, hotels, and restaurants.
