Abstract

The fracking boom in Canada and the United States has been providing crude oil at a rate faster than can be transported via pipeline. As a result, oil companies have been moving crude oil by rail. The demand placed on railroad infrastructure for increased capacity and rail traffic is high. Railway engineers have had to design and construct projects over limited time periods, coming up with innovative time-saving methods along the way. Engineers have begun gathering data online and beginning construction when design is less than complete. While these are not ideal procedures, the demand for these projects to be completed within strict time constraints has required engineers to focus on short-term goals.
