Abstract
This article provides a close-up look at David Gunn, a retired railroader living on a farm in Nova Scotia who in 2002 was asked to return to Washington to run Amtrak. The railroad was in financial straits, and Gunn’s expertise was called upon to help restore service and operations. The article describes Gunn’s accomplishments, which include two consecutive annual ridership records that were delivered by 5,500 fewer employees. The article also describes Gunn’s management style and the challenges still facing the railroad.
