Des premiers contacts jusqu'au récent Plan Nord, la rencontre entre les Autochtones et les descendants des Européens est au cœur du développement économique, politique et culturel du territoire aujourd'hui nommé Québec. Cet héritage commun, avec ses contradictions et ses tensions, nous est parfois rappelé dans des circonstances difficiles, comme celles de la Crise d'Oka, devenue un symbole des relations tendues entre Blancs et Amérindiens. Plus récemment, les images du mouvement Idle No More ont fait le tour de la planète, tel un cri du cœur rappelant la profondeur du fossé qui sépare les nations américaines. Écrit par des auteurs chevronnés issus de plusieurs disciplines – histoire, ethnographie, droit, science politique, linguistique, criminologie –, cet ouvrage unique en son genre propose une série de dix-huit essais qui plongent au cœur des réalités et des enjeux historiques et contemporains des onze peuples autochtones du Québec.
