FEELING BUBBLY : ONTARIO EXPERIMENTS WITH COLD IN-PLACE RECYCLED EXPANDED ASPHALT MIX

Abstract
Ontario, Canada, is using a new version of cold in-place recycling (CIR), which is an established in-situ pavement rehabilitation method that recycles 75 to 125 mm of existing hot-mix asphalt, sizes it, mixes in additional asphalt cement and lays it back down. But instead of using emulsified asphalt for the added asphalt cement, the new system uses foamed, or expanded, asphalt that has been treated with a cold spray to cause it to increase in volume. This combination of CIR and expanded asphalt results in a 100% recycled material referred to as cold in-place recycled expanded asphalt mix (CIREAM). Tables are included showing the falling weight deflectometer results after construction and at one year and the roughness and rutting results for the same time periods. The process was used on a trial section of Highway 7, east of Perth, Ontario, in July 2003. CIREAM resulted in a smooth, hard, uniform surface and was an excellent platform for HMA paving operations. It also appears to provide an economical alternative to conventional CIR.
