Abstract
This article examines plans to expand Los Angeles County Metro Rail’s Gold Line in two directions. The Gold Line, which opened in 2003 and runs just under 14 miles between Los Angeles through Pasadena and east to Sierra Madre Villa, never drew the ridership transportation officials hoped for. But expansion may boost those fares if it would provide residents with a line (Foothill Extension) all the way to Ontario International Airport, which is 37 miles from downtown Los Angeles. At the other end, construction is underway on a six-mile-long extension to Los Angeles’ Union Station. Labeled the East Side Extension, the project should be completed by late 2009.
