Abstract
La maroma (corde épaisse utilisée par les marins) a donné son nom à une expression spectaculaire, rituelle et festive pratiquée par des groupes d’artistes-paysans indigènes et métis dans les régions rurales du Sud du Mexique. Le « spectacle » inclut des acrobates, danseurs de corde, clowns, trapézistes, musiciens, et s’effectue à l’occasion de festivités communautaires. Actuellement, les collectifs de maromeros sont à la fois pris dans des processus de patrimonialisation et de « cirquisation ». Ce dernier s’instaure à partir de l’autodéfinition des collectifs de maromeros en tant que « cirque indigène » et de la revendication de cette tradition indigène par des cirques classiques qui souhaitent asseoir leur réputation. Cet article examine ces différents processus ainsi que les transformations esthétiques, sociales et culturelles qu’ils engendrent au niveau local.
