Abstract
Also known as the Inland Rivers, the Western Rivers of the United States encompass 22 states, from the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming to the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia, and the Mississippi River in Louisiana to the Canadian border in North Dakota. The authors examine United States Coast Guard (USCG) activity along the Western Rivers, including logistics and support, recreational boating safety, disaster relief, contingency planning, merchant licensing and documentation, maritime law enforcement, commercial vessel safety, aids to navigation operations, search and rescue coordination, industrial facility inspections and investigations, marine environmental protection, and port and waterway safety and security.
