Abstract
This article gives a profile of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI), the largest and only publicly traded short-line holding company in North America. The company owns and operates 63 short-line and regional freight rail properties in the U.S., Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. In addition, it owns a minority interest in a Bolivian railroad. The article discusses the various railroads GWI acquired in 2008, the focus on improvements in safety and communications, alternative fuels, and the potential for future acquisitions.
