This article describes how large cities manage sudden, heavy snowstorms. The author describes new winter snow removal technologies, such as satellite navigation systems to better understand which way the storm is moving, and new equipment that includes changing blade shapes on plows, the use of aluminum or fiberglass parts, and tracks rather than wheels for snow-removal vehicles. The author provides costs for large cities; Canada spends as a whole more than a billion dollars a year for snow removal. Also described are some cities’ experiences with recent heavy snowstorms; in Buffalo, snowfall averages 93.5 inches a year, less than some areas, but it starts as early as October and storms can drop 44 inches at a time.
