A new portable recycling plant can extend the potential uses of expanded asphalt by creating a more consistent base mix that a paver can lay instead of having to be placed by a motor grader. The new process and machinery debuted in Ontario last summer. By being able to lay expanded asphalt with a paver, construction can extend longer into the cold weather season. Traditional emulsion-based stabilization mixtures cure through evaporation, which rules out their use when the temperature drops below 60 degrees F. By contrast expanded asphalt cures on compaction. In Ontario that adds another two months to the construction season. The machine developed for the process allows precise control in sizing and placing material, which produce smoother mats, more consistent finish and reduces the amount of handling needed.
