Abstract
Two-lift concrete paving, a process that has been around for a century, is being updated to be more environmentally friendly and is evaluated in a test conducted by the Kansas Department of Transportation on I70 west of Abilene.The newer methods of this paving process, as learned from a Federal Highway Administration scan tour in 2006 of Europe and Canada, involve significant amounts of recycled aggregate that are reused in concrete for the base lift, and employ more efficient and economical use of specialized concrete mixes to produce desirable surface characteristics in the thinner top lift. Another option is to use recycled portland cement concrete as aggregate - not as part of the base layer as it is typically used in the U.S., but as part of the concrete mix. The environment benefits, as resources are used efficiently and long-term performance is improved.
