Abstract
This article provides a history of greater Vancouver’s transit system, which began in 1897 with an electric streetcar system. Interurban tram lines came next, and ran to destinations as far as 60 miles away. Rubber-tired buses made by Brill followed in the 1940s, but were replaced in the mid-1970s by new trolleys built by New Flyer Ind. They in turn were replaced by a newer model from Flyer, which has been in service continuously for 25 years. In 2006, however, a new generation of trolleys with propulsion systems built by Vossioh-Kiepe of Germany began operating on Vancouver streets. Rail has also regained importance recently with SkyTrain, a driverless, fully automated, grade-separated system. After reviewing the history of transit in greater Vancouver, the author attempts to list the various pros and cons of the rubber-tired trolley buses versus urban rail.
