Why this work is in the frame

A frame that forgets how it found something cannot be audited. These are the routes that admitted this work.

No Canadian affiliation. An affiliation-only frame, the usual design, would never have seen this work. It is one of the works that make the case for inverting the frame.

Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Reminiscences of nearly 40 years of Western Canadian railroading are offered by a former Regional Chief Engineers. The author continued in his father's footsteps by becoming a railroader in 1945 before diesels replaced steam in the western parts of Canada. That meant that water supplies were crucial to keep steam engines operating. Crews spent days searching for groundwater that was not too contaminated to be used by the locomotives. Additional projects included surveying and siting bridges over fast-flowing rivers, handling slides and washouts and following jobs wherever they happened. Finally, assuming the Regional Chief Engineer post, the author oversaw such developments as the advent of continuous welded rail, concrete ties and the unit train. The author also notes the occasional place name that commemorates the largely anonymous railroad engineers. The man behind the idea of the lowest crossing of the Continental Divide died in the sinking of the Titanic, but his successor took up the challenge and plotted a course with a westward ruling gradient of four-tenths of one percent.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
