Abstract
As one of the most destructive epidemics in human history, AIDS has claimed more than 25 million lives since 1981 (UNAIDS, 2009) and is the leading cause of death in Africa, where some 15 million Africans have died since the epidemic was first acknowledged (AVERT, 2009). According to some estimates, 70% of the world’s infected population live in sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to 10% of the world’s population (Pillay, 2003). In 2008, more than 14 million children in sub-Saharan Africa had lost one or both parents to HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS, 2009).
