Abstract
Abalone, popularly known as sea ear or \near shell, is an economically important marine \ngastropod mollusc belonging to the genus \nHaliotis. They are usually found attached \nto the rocks or dead corals in sheltered.bays \nor intertidal rocky shores with good water \nmovement and surf action (Fig. 1). Abalones \nare herbivores feeding on sea weeds. Some of \nthe abalone species with good growth rate are \ncultured for meat which has high market \nvalue. Abalone sea farming targeted for its \nmeat has spanned nearly half a decade. \nResearch and development projects and \nhatcheries are in operation in Australia, the \nBritish Isles, Canada, France and United \nStates.
